Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations were crushed by a devastating start as Burkina Faso completed a second victory over the Flying Eagles to win the 2026 WAFU B U20 Championship.
The Young Stallions scored three times inside the opening 15 minutes before adding another goal to secure a commanding 4-1 victory over Nigeria in the final at Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday.
The defeat was particularly painful for Nigeria, because the final had offered an opportunity to avenge their 2-0 group-stage loss to the same opponents.
Instead, Burkina Faso produced an even more emphatic result when it mattered most, ending Nigeria’s hopes of retaining their regional crown and, more importantly, securing the zone’s qualification place for the 2027 U20 AFCON.
Burkina Faso turn early pressure into decisive advantage
The Flying Eagles never managed to settle into the final before Burkina Faso had established a commanding lead.
The Young Stallions attacked with purpose from the opening exchanges, repeatedly finding space in the Nigerian defence and punishing their opponents with remarkable efficiency.
Three goals inside the first 15 minutes left Nigeria facing a huge deficit before the match had properly settled into its rhythm.
Abdul Maikaba’s side attempted to respond after the early setback, but Burkina Faso’s advantage proved too substantial. Nigeria went into the interval trailing heavily and needing an extraordinary turnaround to keep their continental hopes alive.
Burkina Faso added a fourth goal to complete a dominant performance, while Nigeria could only manage a consolation as the Young Stallions finished the final with a 4-1 victory.
The result completed a remarkable tournament for Burkina Faso, who had already demonstrated their strength by beating Nigeria in the group stage before defeating Niger 2-0 in the semi final.

The Flying Eagles had taken a more difficult route to the championship decider.
After finishing behind Burkina Faso in the group, Nigeria faced hosts Côte d’Ivoire in a dramatic semi final and needed penalties to secure their place in the final.
The match finished 2-2 after extra time before goalkeeper Clinton Lawani became the hero, saving two penalties as Nigeria prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.
That victory had revived hopes that the Flying Eagles could overcome their earlier setback against Burkina Faso and finish the tournament as champions.
Instead, the final exposed the same problem that had hurt them in the group stage meeting: Burkina Faso were able to impose themselves on the contest early and create a lead that Nigeria could not recover from.
Defeat ends Nigeria’s U20 AFCON hopes
The tournament’s regional qualification system meant the final also decided which team would claim the WAFU B ticket to the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Burkina Faso’s victory therefore secured their place at the continental tournament, while Nigeria’s defeat brought their qualification campaign to an end.
The result is a major setback for a Nigerian side that had entered the competition as defending regional champions and with a proud record at U20 level.

Nigeria have won the U20 AFCON seven times, making them one of the competition’s most successful nations. They will now have to watch the 2027 tournament from outside after failing to secure qualification through the WAFU B route.
Burkina remained unbeaten and twice defeated one of Africa’s traditional youth football powers.
They first beat Nigeria 2-0 in the group stage and then delivered an even bigger blow in the final, winning 4-1 to claim the WAFU B U20 title and the coveted continental ticket.
