Awoniyi reveals the plan behind his first Coventry goal against Sunderland

Taiwo Awoniyi had waited for his first Premier League goal at Coventry. When the moment arrived against Sunderland, it reflected a plan the Nigerian knew well.

Coventry City needed a response after consecutive Premier League defeats, and their latest fixture offered an opportunity to regain momentum in front of their home supporters.

Frank Lampard’s side delivered the performance they wanted against Sunderland on Saturday, October 31, with their attacking approach producing three goals and an important result in the battle to climb the table.

For Taiwo Awoniyi, however, the afternoon carried a separate significance. The Nigerian striker had returned to the starting lineup still searching for a breakthrough in front of goal since joining Coventry’s Premier League campaign.

That moment eventually arrived at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and it was no accident. Awoniyi’s finish came from a situation the team had specifically prepared to exploit.

Speaking after the match, the forward credited Coventry’s collective performance and explained how their counter-pressing approach helped create the opportunity.

“I think the most important thing is the three points. I think the team from the outset played good together, the game plan worked. I think for the goal, it was just what we planned. Every time counter press and I just have to keep going one against one with the defender and just pick my spot which was a goal!”

The 37th-minute effort came after Awoniyi dispossessed Luke O’Nien before advancing and finishing past Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. It doubled Coventry’s advantage and gave the hosts a two-goal cushion before the interval.

The Nigerian’s goal followed an encouraging start from Lampard’s team. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto had opened the scoring in the 17th minute, putting Coventry ahead before Awoniyi capitalised on the pressing plan to make it 2–0.

Jack Rudoni extended the lead seven minutes after the restart, with his effort taking a deflection off Omar Alderete before beating Roefs.

Sunderland attempted to make a contest of it when Enzo Le Fée converted a penalty in the 67th minute. The spotkick was awarded after Ethan Pinnock handled the ball, with VAR confirming the referee’s decision.

Coventry nevertheless protected their advantage, while Sunderland’s task became more difficult when Alderete was sent off in stoppage time.

The 3–1 victory was important for Lampard’s side after defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham had interrupted their progress. It lifted Coventry to nine points from nine matches and moved them out of the relegation zone.

Coventry will now turn their attention to a trip to Everton on November 6, where the Nigerian striker will hope to build on a first Premier League goal in the club’s colours.
