Fulham recovered from a first-half setback to secure a 1–1 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday, with Alex Iwobi playing a decisive role in their equalizer and fellow Nigerian Calvin Bassey helping the visitors earn a valuable Premier League point.
Nicolas Jackson had put Villa ahead before the break, but Fulham responded with greater purpose after half time. Their persistence eventually paid off when an Iwobi corner caused confusion in the home defense, with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki turning the delivery into his own net in the 64th minute.
The result extended Fulham’s unbeaten league run to three matches and ended a seven-game losing streak at Villa Park. It also gave Iwobi an occasion to remember for a reason that went beyond his contribution to the comeback.
The midfielder’s appearance against Villa took his Premier League total to 329, moving him past Mohamed Salah’s 328 and making him the second-most-capped African player in the competition’s history.
Only former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Kolo Touré, with 353 appearances, now stands ahead of him. Iwobi is 25 appearances short of that mark.
The achievement reflects the consistency of a career that has taken him through three Premier League clubs. He made 100 appearances for Arsenal, featured 123 times for Everton and has now reached 106 outings for Fulham, scoring 36 league goals across those spells.
He has also joined an exclusive group of players to have made at least 100 Premier League appearances for three different clubs. The other members are Gary Speed, Rory Delap, Gareth Barry and James Milner.

But while the milestone provided the personal highlight, Iwobi’s influence on Saturday’s contest was also important to Fulham’s recovery.
Villa had the opportunity to take an early lead in the 16th minute after VAR intervention awarded them a penalty for a handball by Sander Berge. John McGinn stepped forward, but his effort struck the crossbar and Fulham escaped.
The visitors threatened on the counter-attack, with Suzuki producing a strong reaction save to deny Oscar Bobb after a promising move. Villa eventually found the breakthrough in the 39th minute, when Jackson finished Johan Manzambi’s assist to give the hosts a half-time advantage.
It was Jackson’s fifth goal in his last five Premier League appearances, continuing an impressive run in front of goal.
Fulham returned from the interval with more urgency. Bernd Leno kept them in the contest by saving Ian Maatsen’s deflected volley, while Iwobi later forced Suzuki into another smart stop. Gonzalo García followed up, but his effort was deflected over the crossbar.
The resulting corner levelled things. Iwobi delivered an inswinging ball into the Villa penalty area, and Suzuki failed to deal with it cleanly, allowing the ball to cross the goal line for an own goal in the 64th minute.
It was the breakthrough Fulham needed after their improved second half display.
Iwobi was replaced by Tom Cairney in the 75th minute, having helped his side get back on level terms.
Bassey, meanwhile, started in central defence alongside David Affengruber. The Nigerian defender was booked in first half stoppage time but remained part of the Fulham defensive unit as the visitors sought to protect their share of the points.
Villa pushed for a late winner, with Pau Torres heading narrowly wide, but Fulham held on to secure a draw that denied the hosts a fourth consecutive Premier League victory.

The point continued a positive spell for Marco Silva’s side. Fulham have now collected seven points from their last three league matches, following victories over Hull City and Coventry City, and have conceded only once during that run.
Iwobi had scored the only goal in the 1–0 win over Hull City on October 17, while Oscar Bobb was on target in the victory against Coventry.
The draw also gave Fulham four points from their successive away league matches and lifted them to 15th in the table. Aston Villa remained ninth.
