The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Committee has overturned the disciplinary sanctions imposed on Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) president Samuel Eto’o, cancelling both his four-match stadium ban and the accompanying $20,000 fine with immediate effect.
The ruling marks a significant legal victory for the former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker, ending one of the most closely watched disciplinary cases involving a senior football administrator on the continent.
Eto’o had been sanctioned by CAF’s Disciplinary Board in January after being found guilty of misconduct during Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations match against hosts Morocco in Rabat.
CAF ruled that the FECAFOOT president had violated the principles of sportsmanship under Article 2(3) of the CAF Statutes and Article 82 of the CAF Disciplinary Code following his conduct during the match.
The punishment barred the FECAFOOT president from attending Cameroon’s next four international matches inside stadiums and also included a $20,000 financial penalty.

The sanctions sparked widespread debate across African football, with many questioning both the severity of the punishment and its implications for one of the game’s most influential figures.
After challenging the ruling, Eto’o and FECAFOOT took the matter before CAF’s Appeals Committee, which has now ruled in his favour by setting aside the disciplinary measures.
The Appeals Committee’s decision immediately removes the four-match stadium ban and cancels the financial penalty, allowing the former African Footballer of the Year to resume his official duties without restriction.
FECAFOOT welcomed the verdict, describing it as evidence of the independence and credibility of CAF’s judicial system.
In a statement following the ruling, Cameroon’s football federation said the outcome demonstrated that CAF’s legal institutions remain committed to fairness, impartiality and due process when reviewing disciplinary decisions.
The verdict represents another important chapter in Eto’o’s eventful tenure as FECAFOOT president.

Since assuming office in 2021, the four-time African Footballer of the Year has overseen ambitious reforms aimed at restructuring Cameroonian football while also navigating several high-profile disputes involving governance, disciplinary matters and the administration of the game.
Despite the controversies, Eto’o remains one of the most influential figures in African football, both because of his legendary playing career and his leadership role within Cameroon’s football federation.

The Appeals Committee’s decision not only restores his standing but also removes a disciplinary cloud that had threatened to overshadow his continued involvement in African football administration.
With the sanctions now lifted, Eto’o is free to attend Cameroon’s upcoming fixtures and continue carrying out his responsibilities as FECAFOOT president without any restrictions imposed by CAF.
