Nigeria will face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday with the chance to take an early grip on Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Both teams opened their campaigns with victories and head into the meeting in Bissau level on three points. Guinea-Bissau currently lead the group on goal difference after their 2-0 away win over Tanzania, while Nigeria recovered from a goal down to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo.
With Tanzania already assured of a place at the tournament as one of the co-hosts, only one qualification ticket is available from the group. That makes Tuesday’s encounter an early but significant battle between two teams hoping to establish themselves as the leading challenger for that spot.
Guinea-Bissau will approach the game with confidence after producing one of the results of the opening round.
Franculino Djú put the Djurtus ahead against Tanzania in the 33rd minute before Mama Baldé extended their advantage eight minutes into the second half. It was a convincing start for a side that will now attempt to follow it up against the three-time African champions.
Nigeria, meanwhile, had to work harder for their opening three points.
Madagascar took the lead through Ehsan Kari after 16 minutes, but George Ilenikhena levelled in first half stoppage time before substitute Moses Usor completed the comeback with his 65th minute winner.
The result gave Eric Chelle a winning start to the qualifying campaign, although the Super Eagles will know they cannot afford another slow beginning against opponents who have already demonstrated their ability to punish them.
Bissau A familiar opponent with a recent upset
Nigeria have generally enjoyed the better record in this fixture, winning three of their last four meetings, but Guinea-Bissau have already shown that they can cause serious problems.
The Djurtus recorded a 1-0 victory in Abuja during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, with Mama Baldé scoring the decisive goal. Nigeria responded by winning the return fixture 1-0 in Bissau three days later.
That victory is particularly relevant ahead of Tuesday’s meeting at the Estádio 24 de Setembro, where the Super Eagles have previously demonstrated that they can leave with maximum points.
The recent history also suggests a tight contest. The last four meetings have produced three Nigerian victories and one Guinea-Bissau win, with the games generally decided by narrow margins.
Baldé will be one of the players Nigeria must monitor closely after his goal against Tanzania. The Guinea-Bissau forward has already experienced scoring against the Super Eagles and will be looking to repeat that feat on home soil.
Chelle faces attacking selection questions
Nigeria’s preparations have also been complicated by uncertainty over their options in attack.
Victor Osimhen remains unavailable after being ruled out of the September qualifiers with a muscle injury, leaving Chelle to consider alternatives at centre forward.
Ilenikhena took the opportunity against Madagascar, starting the match and scoring on his senior international debut. However, the youngster subsequently trained separately from the main group alongside Akor Adams, leaving their availability for Tuesday’s game uncertain.
That could force Chelle to consider other options, with Tolu Arokodare and Taiwo Awoniyi among the available forwards.
Usor has also strengthened his case after making an immediate impact against Madagascar. The forward came off the bench to score Nigeria’s winning goal and could now be considered for a starting place.
The goalkeeper position is another area to watch. Stanley Nwabali started against Madagascar and made an important save during the comeback victory, while Maduka Okoye was on the bench after arriving late at camp. Chelle must now decide whether to retain Nwabali or make a change against the Djurtus.
Guinea-Bissau looking to build on Tanzania win
Tuesday clash is an opportunity to turn an impressive opening result into genuine momentum.
The Djurtus have attacking threats in Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Beto, and their performance against Tanzania showed they can combine attacking efficiency with the discipline required to protect a lead.
They will also draw confidence from their recent competitive record against Nigeria, particularly the 2023 victory in Abuja.
But Nigeria possess considerably greater attacking depth and will arrive looking to correct the shortcomings exposed by their opening game against Madagascar.
The task for Eric Chelle is to ensure that the Super Eagles start faster, manage the game better and make the most of their opportunities.
A second consecutive victory would give Nigeria six points from their opening two matches and put them in a strong early position before the qualifying campaign resumes in November.
