Wilfred Ndidi emerges as Manchester United midfield target after Ugarte setback

Manchester United have reportedly revived their interest in Wilfred Ndidi, with the Super Eagles captain emerging as an affordable solution to the club's midfield problems following Casemiro's exit and Manuel Ugarte's injury.

Manchester United have reportedly rekindled their interest in Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi as Michael Carrick looks to strengthen his midfield ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

The Nigerian international has emerged as one of the club’s most attainable options after impressing during his first season with Beşiktaş following his departure from Leicester City last summer.

Ndidi quickly established himself as a key figure in Istanbul, making 31 appearances across all competitions while contributing two goals and an assist. His leadership qualities also earned him the role of vice-captain within months of arriving at the Turkish club.

Although Hull City and clubs from the Saudi Pro League have also been linked with the 29-year-old, fresh reports indicate Manchester United are now seriously assessing a move, with Beşiktaş believed to value the midfielder at around €8 million.

Midfield concerns force United back into the market

The departure of Casemiro has left a major void in the squad, while Manuel Ugarte is expected to miss much of the upcoming season after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Those setbacks have forced Carrick to accelerate plans to reinforce his midfield, with Ndidi viewed as an experienced player capable of making an immediate impact rather than requiring a lengthy adaptation period.

Unlike many overseas targets, the Nigerian is already well accustomed to the demands of English football after spending eight successful seasons with Leicester City.

Premier League experience makes Ndidi attractive

During his time at Leicester, Ndidi built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defensive midfielders.

His ability to win tackles, intercept passes and shield the back four consistently placed him among the league’s leading ball winners, while his disciplined positional play allowed more attack-minded teammates to flourish.

That familiarity with the Premier League is regarded as one of the biggest reasons behind United’s renewed interest, particularly as the club seeks proven performers capable of contributing immediately.

His relatively modest transfer valuation would also allow United to strengthen other areas of the squad without making a significant dent in their summer budget.

Beyond his qualities on the pitch, Ndidi’s leadership has also caught United’s attention.

The midfielder has captained Nigeria on several occasions and was appointed Beşiktaş vice-captain shortly after joining the club, underlining the respect he commands within dressing rooms.

Manchester United have often been criticised for lacking experienced leaders during difficult periods, making Ndidi’s character another attractive aspect of a potential deal.

At 29, he may not represent a long term investment, but United see him as a dependable, low risk option capable of providing stability as they rebuild their midfield ahead of the new season.
