Eric Chelle has reportedly emerged as Algeria’s preferred managerial target following the Desert Foxes’ disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to reports from FootMercato, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has identified the Super Eagles head coach as its leading candidate should it decide to part ways with current boss Vladimir Petković.
Algeria’s World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 32 after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in Vancouver, a result that has intensified scrutiny over Petković despite leading the North Africans back to the global tournament after a 12-year absence.
Breel Embolo gave Switzerland an early advantage before Dan Ndoye doubled the lead shortly after the restart. Although Algeria enjoyed the majority of possession, defensive lapses and tactical shortcomings proved costly once again, with the team having already conceded seven goals during the group stage.
The defeat also marked the end of an era as captain Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football after the match.
While Petković only recently signed a contract extension until 2028, growing dissatisfaction among supporters has reportedly prompted the FAF to begin assessing alternative options.

Chelle has quickly enhanced his reputation since taking charge of Nigeria in January 2025.
One performance believed to have particularly impressed Algerian officials was Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles successfully nullified one of Africa’s most dangerous attacking teams.
The Franco-Malian coach also possesses first-hand knowledge of Algerian football, having previously managed MC Oran before accepting the Nigeria job.
His experience in the Algerian league, familiarity with the country’s football culture and understanding of local expectations are viewed as major advantages should the federation pursue his appointment.
Chelle’s ability to manage high profile dressing rooms has further strengthened his credentials.
Since arriving in Nigeria, he has overseen stars including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and several senior internationals, experience Algeria believe could prove valuable as they begin life after Mahrez’s international retirement.
His attacking philosophy is also understood to align with Algeria’s traditional football identity, with Chelle favouring possession based football, quick passing combinations and proactive attacking play.

The Nigeria Football Federation recently extended Chelle’s contract, with his responsibilities now also including the Olympic Eagles, underlining the federation’s long-term commitment to the coach following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Any approach from Algeria would therefore require negotiations with the NFF, who are believed to have no intention of letting their coach leave anytime soon.
