Fresh uncertainty has emerged over Eric Chelle’s future as Super Eagles head coach after reports claimed the Franco-Malian has not signed a contract extension with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), despite public assurances from the National Sports Commission (NSC) less than two weeks ago.
The development raises fresh questions over one of Nigerian football’s biggest off-field stories, particularly as reports linking Chelle with Algeria continue to gather momentum.
On June 23, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko announced during a meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja that all parties had agreed new terms that would keep Chelle in charge of the Super Eagles.
The announcement was made publicly before journalists, with Dikko also revealing that the coach would assume responsibility for Nigeria’s U-23 national team as part of a broader restructuring of the country’s football programme ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
At the time, multiple reports indicated that Chelle’s improved deal would see him earn around $100,000 per month, while the expanded role is as a result of growing confidence in his work following Nigeria’s third place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, no formal contract signing or official confirmation has since been issued by the NFF.
That silence has now fuelled speculation after BBC Sport journalist Oluwashina Okeleji challenged claims that the agreement had been finalised.
“Éric Chelle has not extended his contract with Nigeria and reports to the contrary follow cursory comments by the NSC chairman,” Okeleji wrote on his official X account.
He further claimed that the NFF are facing increasing competition to retain the coach, with several African national teams and clubs from North Africa monitoring his situation.
“The NFF face competition from a host of African countries and North African clubs eager to sign the Franco-Malian coach. Deal ends in January,” he added.
Okeleji also appeared to criticise the manner in which the earlier announcement was handled.
“Not every conversation deserves a microphone. Some people rush to the media before the facts are settled, only to end up explaining themselves later. The best officials know the difference between progress and completion. The rest usually find themselves issuing clarifications.”

The latest revelation also lends greater weight to reports that Algeria are considering Chelle as a potential successor to Vladimir Petković following the Desert Foxes’ disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Chelle is highly regarded within Algerian football after previously managing MC Oran before taking over the Super Eagles in January 2025. His tactical reputation has also grown following Nigeria’s impressive AFCON campaign, where he guided the Super Eagles to a podium finish while remaining unbeaten in competitive matches.
Should Chelle’s contract situation remain unresolved, Algeria’s reported interest could become significantly more credible than initially believed when the NSC publicly declared that a new agreement had been reached.
