Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has described his loan spell at Bundesliga club Augsburg as a key phase in his career, helping him grow as a player.
The Nigerian moved to Germany last season after struggling for game time at Brentford under then-coach Thomas Frank. At Augsburg, Onyeka quickly became a regular starter, featuring in 31 of 34 league games and registering one assist.
“People often say that in the Bundesliga, players run a lot compared to the Premier League. When I got there, I felt it. They always want to go forward with every ball,” Onyeka said.
“In the Premier League, teams know when to calm the game, when to move and when to play some passes before going forward; in Germany, teams just want to go forward at every opportunity. It suited me really well; I love to go forward and track back. It was good for my game.”
Onyeka returned to Brentford in the summer because his loan contract had no option-to-buy clause, and Augsburg, like many Bundesliga clubs, would likely have struggled to afford a permanent deal.

This season, Onyeka has mostly appeared as a substitute in the Premier League, with his only starts coming in the EFL Cup. He will be hoping to earn a regular starting spot under Keith Andrews.

His contract with Brentford runs until 2027, leaving open the possibility of another Bundesliga stint if the English club does not offer an extension.
