Spain delivered the response expected of a tournament favourite as Luis de la Fuente’s side brushed aside Saudi Arabia with a commanding 4-0 victory to reignite their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

After a frustrating goalless draw against Cape Verde in their opening Group H match, questions had begun to emerge around Spain’s attacking sharpness. Those doubts did not last long in Atlanta.

With four changes made to the starting line-up, De la Fuente sent a clear message that standards had to improve. The result was a performance full of intensity, creativity and clinical finishing, led by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and experienced forward Mikel Oyarzabal.

The European champions dominated from the opening whistle, controlling possession and pinning Saudi Arabia deep inside their own half. Yamal, handed his first World Cup start after recovering from a hamstring injury, immediately transformed Spain’s attack with his direct running and relentless threat down the right flank.

His impact was rewarded inside the opening stages when he arrived at the far post to convert a superb delivery from Oyarzabal, ending Spain’s lengthy World Cup goal drought and finally giving De la Fuente’s men the breakthrough they had desperately sought.

The goal settled Spain and exposed the gulf in quality between the two sides.

Saudi Arabia, who had earned praise for their disciplined display in a 1-1 draw with Uruguay, struggled to cope with the movement and technical precision of Spain’s front line. Their five-man defence was repeatedly stretched as Yamal, Oyarzabal and Alex Baena found space across the final third.

Oyarzabal soon took centre stage. The Real Sociedad forward doubled Spain’s advantage after forcing an earlier save from Mohammed Al-Owais before adding another shortly afterwards to effectively end the contest before half-time.

His movement between the lines caused constant problems for Saudi Arabia’s defenders, while his understanding with Yamal gave Spain the cutting edge that had been missing against Cape Verde.

Behind them, Spain’s midfield trio of Rodri, Pedri and Dani Olmo controlled the game with authority.

Rodri dictated the tempo and repeatedly recovered possession, while Pedri’s intelligence in deeper areas allowed Spain to maintain relentless pressure. Olmo added creativity and energy, finishing the opening half with a flawless passing display that highlighted Spain’s complete control.

By the interval, Saudi Arabia had offered little resistance and found themselves fortunate not to be trailing by an even wider margin.

Any hopes of a second-half revival disappeared shortly after the restart when an unfortunate own goal from Hassan Al Tambakti extended Spain’s lead to four.

Marc Cucurella’s effort created the danger, and the Saudi defender could do little to prevent the ball from finding its way into the net.

With the result effectively secured, Spain continued to dominate possession and territory while maintaining their defensive discipline.

Saudi Arabia managed only a handful of attacking moments throughout the match, with goalkeeper Unai Simon largely reduced to the role of spectator. The Spain goalkeeper was required to make just one save all evening as his side completed one of the most one-sided displays of the tournament so far.

Even when De la Fuente withdrew both Yamal and Oyarzabal at half time, Spain’s control never wavered.

The introduction of Ferran Torres and Yeremy Pino ensured the pressure remained constant, while the backline, marshalled by Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte, comfortably dealt with everything Saudi Arabia attempted.

The only disappointment for Spain arrived in stoppage time when Torres saw a late effort ruled out for offside.

After failing to score against Cape Verde, Spain produced the emphatic statement many expected from one of the leading contenders for the trophy. The victory moves them into a strong position in Group H ahead of a crucial clash with Uruguay.

For Saudi Arabia, the defeat was a sobering reminder of the level required to compete with the world’s elite. However, qualification hopes remain alive, with a final group match against Cape Verde offering an opportunity to reach the knockout stage as one of the best third placed teams.
