Brazil needed every second of 101 pulsating minutes before finally overcoming a spirited Japan 2-1 to secure their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 at NRG Stadium in Houston.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side looked destined for extra time after battling back from a first half deficit, but Gabriel Martinelli delivered the decisive blow five minutes into stoppage time to shatter Japanese hearts and keep Brazil’s title ambitions firmly alive.
The five-time world champions began brightly and dominated possession from the opening whistle, forcing Zion Suzuki into early action. The Japanese goalkeeper produced an excellent save to push Matheus Cunha’s powerful effort around the post before repeatedly frustrating Brazil’s attacking stars.
Despite Brazil’s control, it was Japan who landed the first punch.

In the 29th minute, Kaishu Sano collected possession near midfield, surged past Casemiro and unleashed a superb low strike from distance that flew beyond Alisson into the bottom corner to stun the Selecao.
Brazil struggled to find their rhythm before the interval, with Japan defending superbly while threatening on the counter as Hajime Moriyasu’s men carried a deserved 1-0 lead into half-time.

Ancelotti was forced into an early second-half reshuffle after Lucas Paqueta suffered an injury, introducing Endrick immediately after the restart.
The changes sparked Brazil into life. Zion Suzuki continued to stand tall, denying Bruno Guimaraes with an outstanding save before Casemiro saw another close-range header brilliantly kept out.
The pressure finally told in the 56th minute. Gabriel Magalhaes delivered a dangerous cross that evaded the Japanese defence, allowing Casemiro to power home a header from close range and restore parity.

Brazil pushed relentlessly for a winner. Vinicius Junior came agonisingly close to producing one of the goals of the tournament, weaving through defenders before seeing his effort tipped onto the post by the outstanding Suzuki.
Japan continued to battle courageously but gradually retreated deeper as Brazil pinned them inside their own half.
The decisive breakthrough eventually arrived in stoppage time. Bruno Guimaraes spotted Martinelli in space inside the penalty area, and the Arsenal forward kept his composure to guide a precise finish beyond Suzuki via the inside of the post in the 95th minute, sending Brazilian players and supporters into wild celebrations.
The late strike completed another famous Brazil comeback and ended Japan’s impressive resistance after a disciplined display.

Brazil’s victory also extended their remarkable dominance over the Samurai Blue, maintaining their unbeaten competitive record against Japan while keeping alive hopes of another deep World Cup run.
The defeat brought another painful end to an otherwise impressive campaign for Japan, as they once again fell short of reaching the latter stages of the global tournament despite pushing one of football’s traditional giants to the limit.
