Curaçao head coach Dick Advocaat believes his players have every reason to leave the 2026 FIFA World Cup with pride after insisting they exceeded expectations despite a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast that ended their historic campaign.

The Caribbean nation bowed out in Philadelphia after Nicolas Pepe scored twice to send the Elephants into the Round of 32, but Advocaat refused to let the result overshadow what he described as an outstanding tournament from the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup.

Speaking after the final whistle, the veteran Dutch coach praised his players for the courage they showed against opponents he repeatedly described as “world teams.”

“I think we really played a good game against an excellent team,” Advocaat said.

“If you look at how we played the second and third games, it offers a lot of perspective. I’m particularly happy with what they showed.

“They worked very hard because you play against better teams, they know that. But if you’re a little lucky, you can also get ahead in the first half.”

Although Ivory Coast dominated possession before sealing victory through Pepe’s second-half brace, Advocaat believed the contest was far closer than the scoreline suggested.

“We gave away a goal, 1-0. You shouldn’t do that against teams like this,” he admitted.

“But overall, I’m very satisfied with what the boys have done.

“They had more possession, but I think we were more effective offensively. We had the possibilities.”

The 77-year-old also pointed to the gulf in individual quality between the two squads, highlighting the financial value of Ivory Coast’s attacking talent.

“Their two ex-players are worth 105 million,” he said.

“So you can already see the difference in quality. They have more threat.”

Despite finishing bottom of Group E, Curaçao earned worldwide admiration after recovering from a 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening match to hold Ecuador to a goalless draw before producing another spirited display against the African champions.

Advocaat believes those performances proved his players belong on football’s biggest stage.

“The team has surpassed itself,” he said.

“They played against real world teams — Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Germany. Those are world teams.

“They played with full enthusiasm and a lot of courage. I think that was very important.”

The former Netherlands manager believes the experience will become the foundation for future progress, insisting Curaçao must now build on what they achieved in North America.

“We all want to get better,” he said.

“We have to try to exploit that by getting even better. We have to see if we can find more players who would like to play for Curaçao.”

Advocaat remains optimistic that the nation’s first World Cup appearance can be the beginning rather than the peak of the project.

“I see the prospects positively,” he said when asked about the future.

“But a few positions have to get better. We have to improve that because you have to work so hard to get results. You can see the opponents all play easier.”

Despite the elimination, the experienced coach insisted he had no regrets over his tactical decisions, standing by the starting XI that had earned Curaçao their historic first World Cup point against Ecuador.

“No, I don’t think so,” Advocaat said when asked if he would change anything.

“I thought they played very well. We just played against a world team.

“We were not modest. We played defensively and forward. But you have to be lucky to score from one of those attacks.

“We had the same number of attacks as the opponents. They scored. That’s the difference.”

For a nation of just over 150,000 people making its World Cup debut, Curaçao’s campaign may have ended in the group stage, but Coach Advocaat believes his players have laid a platform that can inspire the country’s footballing future.
