Hussein Mohammed has revealed details of his meeting with Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

Motsepe is currently in Nairobi for the Africa Forward Summit and is also holding a series of meetings with senior football and government officials from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania as preparations intensify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the three East African nations under the “Pamoja” banner, is expected to be one of the biggest sporting events ever staged in the region.

During his visit, the CAF president has already met several major stakeholders, including Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi and acting CAF General Secretary Samson Adamu.

Motsepe also held discussions with Moses Magogo alongside Uganda’s Sports Minister Peter Ogwang, Tanzania Football Federation president Wallace Karia and Tanzanian Sports Minister Paul Makonda.

Hussein Mohammed outlines AFCON discussions

Mohammed later shared details of the meeting on his X account, explaining that discussions centred on reviewing progress made towards hosting the 2027 AFCON.

According to the FKF president, the meeting brought together key stakeholders overseeing the tournament preparations across the three host countries.

“We held a successful meeting chaired by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, to review the Pamoja AFCON 2027 preparations across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania,” Mohammed wrote.

“Dr Motsepe commended the significant progress made by the three host nations and expressed confidence that Pamoja AFCON 2027 will be a resounding success.”

Mohammed further stated that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania reaffirmed their commitment to working together to ensure full readiness for the tournament.

“The host nations reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration to ensure full readiness and to deliver the most successful AFCON in the competition’s history,” he added.

Despite the high-level discussions, there was no indication that Motsepe directly addressed the ongoing leadership dispute currently rocking Kenyan football.

The FKF has been engulfed in internal conflict since last month after a faction led by deputy president McDonald Mariga reportedly removed Mohammed from office during a disputed National Executive Committee meeting.

Mohammed has strongly rejected the move, insisting the meeting was unconstitutional because only the federation president has the authority to convene NEC sessions under FKF statutes.

The dispute has since escalated into a public power struggle, with both camps issuing conflicting directives while legal battles continue in Kenyan courts.

The Sports Disputes Tribunal and the High Court have already issued temporary rulings blocking Mariga’s faction from enforcing decisions taken during the controversial meeting.

With Kenya preparing to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania, concerns remain over whether the internal wrangling could affect the organization and smooth delivery of the continental tournament.

However, CAF’s latest engagements appear focused on ensuring preparations remain on track despite the off-field tensions surrounding Kenyan football administration.
