FC Utrecht have confirmed the signing of Nigerian-born winger Emmanuel Chigozie Owen from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen on a permanent transfer, with the highly rated teenager putting pen to paper on a long-term contract.

The 19-year-old has signed a deal that runs until June 2030, ending speculation over his future after attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.

Born in Heilbronn, Germany, Owen developed through Hoffenheim’s academy before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. During his time at the Bundesliga club, he featured for both the Under-17 and Under-19 sides, made eight appearances in the UEFA Youth League and was regularly involved with Germany’s youth national teams at Under-17 and Under-19 level.

The talented attacker also earned valuable first team exposure last season, training with Bayer Leverkusen’s senior squad and being included in the matchday squad for a Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg.

Despite interest from several clubs, Owen revealed that FC Utrecht’s vision for his development convinced him to make the move to the Netherlands.

“The first time I came here, it immediately felt like a warm bath,” Owen told the club’s official website.

“I think I’m strong on the ball and can contribute physically. I’m someone who is creative and loves creating chances, assists and goals.

“My goal is to adapt here in the Netherlands as quickly as possible. I want to play as much as possible. Whether that’s with Jong FC Utrecht or the first team doesn’t really matter to me at the moment. I just want to develop myself.”

Owen is capable of operating across the attacking line and arrives in Utrecht with a growing reputation as one of the most exciting young prospects of Nigerian heritage in European football.

The move offers the teenager a clearer pathway to senior football as he looks to continue his development in the Eredivisie, with FC Utrecht viewing him as a player capable of making an impact both with the club’s reserve side and eventually the first team.
