Netherlands cruise past Tunisia to finish top as Renard’s side leave World Cup without a point

The Netherlands sealed top spot in Group F with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Tunisia, condemning Hervé Renard's side to a winless exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Netherlands wrapped up top spot in Group F with an assured 3-1 victory over Tunisia in Kansas City, extending their unbeaten FIFA World Cup run to 15 matches while condemning Herve Renard’s side to a third straight defeat at the tournament.

Already through before kick off, Ronald Koeman’s men produced another polished display, capitalising on Tunisia’s defensive mistakes before comfortably seeing out the contest to book a Round of 32 clash with Morocco.

For Tunisia, the defeat completed a miserable campaign. After suffering heavy losses in their opening two fixtures, they exited the World Cup with zero points and 12 goals conceded, although they avoided the unwanted record of becoming the first nation to lose all three group matches by four goals or more.

Nightmare start for Tunisia

Despite beginning brightly when Hazem Mastouri created an early chance that Ismael Gharbi blazed over inside two minutes, Tunisia quickly found themselves behind.

The breakthrough arrived in the third minute when Donyell Malen released Denzel Dumfries down the right, and the wing-back’s dangerous low cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Ellyes Skhiri.

Before Tunisia had time to recover, the Oranje struck again through a cleverly delivered Tijjani Reijnders free-kick was headed across goal by captain Virgil van Dijk, allowing Brian Brobbey to power home from close range in the seventh minute for his third goal of the tournament.

The two-goal cushion allowed the Dutch to dictate proceedings with trademark composure, dominating possession and patiently stretching Tunisia’s defensive shape.

Anis Slimane forced Bart Verbruggen into a comfortable save with a well-directed header, while Ismael Gharbi also tested the Dutch defence during an encouraging spell.

However, the Netherlands continued creating the clearer opportunities.

Ryan Gravenberch fired over from distance, Cody Gakpo repeatedly found dangerous pockets between the lines, while Dumfries remained a constant outlet down the right flank. Goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen also produced several important saves to prevent the scoreline from becoming more emphatic before the interval.

Mastouri gives Tunisia hope

Tunisia finally found a route back into the contest early in the second half.

Following a well-worked corner routine, Hannibal Mejbri delivered an inviting cross that Hazem Mastouri met with a powerful header beyond Verbruggen in the 54th minute.

There was a brief VAR review to check the build-up, but the goal stood, reducing the deficit to 2-1 and briefly reigniting Tunisian belief.

Moments later, Mastouri nearly grabbed another, only for Verbruggen to produce a smart save from the striker’s long-range effort.

Reijnders’ dangerous corner found Jan Paul van Hecke, who rose above the Tunisian defence to power a superb header into the top corner for his maiden international goal, restoring the Netherlands’ two goal advantage in the 62nd minute.

The Dutch nearly added a spectacular fourth shortly afterwards when Reijnders crashed a brilliant effort against the underside of the crossbar.

Koeman then rotated his squad, introducing Memphis Depay, Justin Kluivert, Crysencio Summerville, Teun Koopmeiners and Noa Lang, with the fresh legs maintaining the Oranje’s control throughout the closing stages.

Lang almost crowned his lively cameo with a goal, but Dahmen produced another excellent save before also denying Van Dijk’s towering late header.

Meanwhile, the tournament ends in disappointment for Tunisia. Renard’s men leave the United States without a point, but they did at least show greater attacking ambition in their final outing after two heavy defeats earlier in the group stage.
