Morocco conquer penalty shootout to send the Netherlands back home

Morocco defeated the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a gripping 1-1 draw over 120 minutes in Monterrey to book their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup last 16.

Morocco held their composure from the penalty spot to eliminate the Netherlands 3-2 after an absorbing 1-1 draw across 120 bruising minutes, becoming the second nation to survive a shootout on a dramatic day of Round of 32 action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After Germany had fallen to Paraguay on penalties earlier in the day, another heavyweight exited the tournament as Yassine Bounou produced the decisive save before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the winning kick to send the Atlas Lions into the last 16.

It was a contest defined as much by fierce tackles and defensive discipline as moments of attacking quality, with both teams refusing to yield in a physically demanding encounter before a crowd of more than 51,000 at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey.

Morocco looked the brighter side in the opening exchanges despite seeing less of the ball. Neil El Aynaoui forced Bart Verbruggen into a stunning point-blank save with a powerful header before the Dutch goalkeeper produced an even finer stop to tip Achraf Hakimi’s thunderous effort over the crossbar.

The Netherlands gradually settled into their passing rhythm but found Morocco’s disciplined defensive shape difficult to break down. Denzel Dumfries came close from a set piece while Micky van de Ven tested Bounou, yet clear cut opportunities remained scarce in a first half dominated by robust challenges and tactical discipline.

Morocco continued to threaten first, with Hakimi crashing a fierce strike against the crossbar after Bouaddi had squandered a promising opening. Those missed opportunities proved costly when Ronald Koeman’s substitutions changed the momentum.

Cody Gakpo was emotional after scoring the Netherlands’ go-ahead goal. He and his wife announced the loss of their unborn son two days ago.

Wout Weghorst, introduced moments earlier, played a pivotal role in the breakthrough after flicking the ball into the path of Crysencio Summerville, whose composed square pass allowed Cody Gakpo to fire low beyond Bounou in the 72nd minute.

The goal appeared destined to send the Oranje into the next round as Morocco struggled to find a breakthrough despite sustained pressure.

But with elimination only moments away, Mohamed Ouahbi’s side summoned one final attack.

Deep into stoppage time, substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a teasing cross that Issa Diop attacked brilliantly, powering a close-range header beyond Verbruggen to spark wild celebrations and force extra time.

The additional 30 minutes continued at the same relentless pace. Verbruggen produced one of the tournament’s finest saves to somehow deny Soufiane Rahimi from close range, while both sides battled through fatigue in search of a decisive winner. Morocco enjoyed lengthy spells of possession, but the Dutch defence remained resilient, ensuring the match became the second Round of 32 tie to require penalties.

The shootout delivered yet more twists. El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco’s opening penalty, only for Justin Kluivert to immediately hand the initiative back by hitting the post himself. Soufiane Rahimi then squeezed his effort over the line despite Verbruggen getting a strong hand to the ball, while Teun Koopmeiners and Wout Weghorst converted confidently for the Netherlands.

Quinten Timber dragged his penalty wide to reopen the door for Morocco, but Hakimi then rattled the post to keep the contest alive. When Bounou brilliantly denied Crysencio Summerville with one hand, Saibari stepped forward with the opportunity to settle the tie and calmly dispatched the winning penalty into the bottom corner.

The victory sends Morocco into the World Cup last 16 for the second consecutive tournament and keeps alive hopes of matching or even surpassing the historic semi-final run they achieved in Qatar four years ago.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, another World Cup campaign ended in agonising fashion, their 11-match unbeaten competitive run coming to an end after they were unable to capitalise on Gakpo’s second-half breakthrough in a contest ultimately decided by the finest of margins.
