Cape Verde make history as Saudi Arabia crash out in dramatic World Cup finale

Cape Verde reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stages on their tournament debut after a disciplined 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, setting up a blockbuster Round of 32 clash with Argentina.

Cape Verde completed one of the most remarkable stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding Saudi Arabia to a tense 0-0 draw that secured a historic place in the Round of 32 on their tournament debut.

With Spain defeating Uruguay in the other Group H fixture, the Blue Sharks needed only a point to progress, and they produced another disciplined, resilient display to finish second behind the Spaniards while ending Saudi Arabia’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

For a nation of just over half a million people, scattered across islands in the Atlantic Ocean, it was a night that transcended football. It was the culmination of years of growth, belief and perseverance as Cape Verde became the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup knockout rounds.

The magnitude of the occasion was evident long before kick-off, with the legendary “Mother Vozinha” among the supporters inside the stadium hoping to witness another unforgettable chapter in the country’s football history.

Saudi Arabia entered the contest knowing only victory would keep their campaign alive, but despite dominating possession for lengthy spells, Georgios Donis’ side struggled to break down a Cape Verde defence that has become one of the tournament’s toughest to breach.

Instead, it was Pedro Brito’s side that carved out the better openings in a cautious first half.

Willy Semedo twice came close to breaking the deadlock, first forcing Mohammed Al-Owais into a sharp save with a powerful effort from the edge of the area before volleying narrowly wide after another dangerous attack.

Saudi Arabia’s best chance before the interval arrived through captain Mohamed Kanno, whose looping header appeared destined for the roof of the net until veteran goalkeeper Vozinha reacted brilliantly to gather comfortably.

With news filtering through that Spain were leading Uruguay, Cape Verde emerged after the break knowing every passing minute brought them closer to history.

Cape Verde will face defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after completing a historic unbeaten group-stage campaign on their tournament debut.

Jamiro Monteiro almost delivered the decisive breakthrough moments into the second half after a flowing team move sliced open the Saudi defence, only for Al-Owais to deny him with a routine save.

The Saudi goalkeeper was called into action again midway through the half, producing perhaps the save of the evening to keep out Laros Duarte after the substitute found space inside the penalty area.

Saudi Arabia finally mounted sustained pressure in the closing stages as substitutes Musab Al Juwayr, Abdullah Al Hamdan and Mohammed Abu Al Shamat injected urgency into their attack.

Abu Al Shamat forced Vozinha into an outstanding save with a fierce drive, while Al Hamdan was denied again deep into stoppage time as the experienced Cape Verde goalkeeper remained equal to everything thrown at him.

Cape Verde almost crowned the night with victory when Nuno Da Costa found himself unmarked in the closing moments, but his header drifted agonisingly wide with the goal at his mercy.

The draw completed an unbeaten group-stage campaign for the World Cup debutants, who followed a goalless draw against Spain with an entertaining 2-2 result against Uruguay before earning the point that secured qualification.

In doing so, Cape Verde became the first African nation ever to progress from a World Cup group with three draws and the first team since Chile in 1998 to advance without winning a group-stage match.

The result brought another disappointing World Cup campaign to an end for Saudi Arabia . The Green Falcons failed to find the breakthrough they desperately required and exited at the group stage once again despite flashes of quality throughout the tournament.
