Unbeaten Cape Verde rewarded with Argentina showdown at World Cup

Cape Verde will face defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after completing a historic unbeaten group-stage campaign on their tournament debut.

Cape Verde’s remarkable FIFA World Cup debut has earned them the ultimate examination after the Blue Sharks secured a Round of 32 meeting with defending champions Argentina following a history making unbeaten run through Group H.

The African newcomers held Saudi Arabia to a tense 0-0 draw on Friday night, a result that, coupled with Spain’s victory over Uruguay in the group’s other fixture, confirmed Pedro Brito’s side as runners-up and sent them into the knockout rounds for the first time.

For a nation of just over 500,000 people making its maiden appearance on football’s biggest stage, qualification alone represents one of the tournament’s most compelling stories. The reward is now a blockbuster encounter with Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina in Miami.

Cape Verde reached the knockout phase without suffering defeat, opening their campaign with a goalless draw against Spain before earning an impressive 2-2 result against Uruguay and completing the job with another disciplined defensive display against Saudi Arabia.

The achievement is historic on multiple fronts. Cape Verde become the smallest nation by population ever to reach the World Cup knockout stages and the first African country to advance from a World Cup group after drawing all three matches. They are also the first team since Chile in 1998 to qualify from the group stage with three successive draws.

The decisive point arrived after another tactically mature performance against Saudi Arabia, who entered the contest knowing only victory would keep their hopes alive.

While Saudi Arabia enjoyed spells of possession, Cape Verde created the clearer opportunities. Willy Semedo twice tested goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais during the first half before Jamiro Monteiro was denied shortly after the restart.

Laros Duarte then forced another excellent save from Al-Owais with 15 minutes remaining, while Nuno Da Costa squandered a glorious opportunity to snatch victory late on when he headed wide from close range.

Saudi Arabia pushed desperately in the closing minutes, but Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced the saves required to preserve the clean sheet that ultimately sealed qualification.

The result ended Saudi Arabia’s campaign at the group stage, extending their struggles at World Cup finals, while Cape Verde celebrated another milestone in what has already become a landmark tournament for the island nation.
