Jay-Jay Okocha has revealed that Bayern Munich tried to sign him in 1991, but an unusual combination of his age and German football regulations prevented one of the biggest clubs in Europe from completing the move.
The Nigerian legend was still at the beginning of his professional career when Bayern became interested after watching him play with their youth team at a tournament in Switzerland.
Speaking on the Obi-One Podcast, Okocha explained that Bayern wanted to sign him but could not offer him a professional contract immediately because he had not reached the required age within the relevant registration period.
“I got an offer from Bayern Munich. I went with their youth team to a tournament in Switzerland, and after that, they wanted to sign me,” Okocha said.
The problem was that Okocha would not turn 18 until August, while German regulations at the time required players to have turned 18 before July to play professionally during that season.
That restriction had already affected his situation at the third-tier club where he was playing. Despite helping the team win its regional league, Okocha was unable to feature in the promotion playoffs because of the age rule.

Bayern were still interested, but the offer presented to Okocha was only verbal because the club could not immediately register him on a professional contract.
“They said, ‘Oh, we can’t give you a professional contract until you turn 18,’” Okocha recalled.
As a young player travelling from Nigeria and facing the prospect of waiting almost another year before being able to play professionally for Bayern, the uncertainty was significant.
Okocha was prepared to take the risk, but he wanted the club’s commitment in writing.
“I asked them, ‘Can you put it in writing on paper? Because I can’t come all the way from Nigeria to rely on a verbal contract. What if I get injured and you tell me to go home? I’ll have nothing,’” he said.
Bayern could not provide the assurance he wanted, leaving Okocha with a difficult decision.
Rather than wait without a formal agreement, he returned to Germany and signed for Borussia Neunkirchen, a third-division club, as he continued his development.
The decision eventually opened another door. by the winter transfer window, Eintracht Frankfurt had moved for the young Nigerian and, unlike Bayern, understood the structural difficulties surrounding his registration.
Frankfurt offered him a one-year amateur contract followed by a two-year professional deal, giving Okocha a clear pathway into senior football.

Okocha went on to spend five years at Eintracht Frankfurt, where his performances in the Bundesliga established him as one of the most exciting attacking players in Germany.
He later moved to Fenerbahçe before earning a high-profile transfer to Paris Saint-Germain and subsequently played in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers before finishing his European career with Hull City.
His time at Frankfurt remains particularly memorable, with Okocha producing some of the most spectacular moments of his early career, including his famous goal against Oliver Kahn and Bayern Munich in 1993.
In total, he made 90 Bundesliga appearances for Frankfurt, scoring 18 goals and providing 13 assists, according to the figures cited in the original report.

Okocha did not turn Bayern down because he lacked ambition. Instead, he wanted certainty before committing his future to a club that could not give him a written professional agreement.
