NPFL unveils long-term roadmap with 2026/27 and 2027/28 dates confirmed

The Nigeria Premier Football League has unveiled its 2026/27 season calendar while also tentatively confirming the start and end dates for the 2027/28 campaign in a move aimed at improving long-term planning.

The Nigeria Premier Football League has taken an early step towards improving long-term planning by unveiling the full calendar for the 2026/27 campaign while also tentatively mapping out the 2027/28 season.

The newly released schedule confirms that the 2026/27 season will kick off between 28 and 30 August 2026, with the curtain falling on 30 May 2027 after 38 matchdays.

In a move that highlights the league’s intention to provide greater certainty for clubs and stakeholders, the NPFL also pencilled in the following campaign, with the 2027/28 season provisionally scheduled to begin between 27 and 29 August 2027 and conclude on 28 May 2028.

While the dates remain tentative, the early projection offers clubs, players and commercial partners a clearer picture of the league’s long-term calendar, allowing for improved planning around recruitment, pre-season preparations and logistical arrangements.

The 2026/27 fixture schedule maintains the league’s traditional 38-match format, with clubs expected to battle across nine months before the season reaches its conclusion at the end of May.

Publishing the timeline nearly two years in advance also signals the league’s ambition to build greater consistency in domestic scheduling, an area that has historically presented challenges for Nigerian football.

A predictable calendar is expected to benefit clubs competing in continental competitions by helping them better prepare for CAF tournaments while also assisting broadcasters, sponsors and supporters in planning around key dates.

The release of the calendar comes as preparations gather pace for another highly anticipated NPFL campaign, with clubs already intensifying recruitment and pre-season activities ahead of the August kick-off.
